It's new and it's here. And you can sit on it.

It's my couch. (Or sofa. Or chesterfield?)

Delivered fresh about an hour ago.

So far, I love it. And I haven't even sat in it at my own house yet. But I still love it. The right colour (too dark? I'm bluffing this confidence.). And it had better be the right size (you see?).

The old orange couch is now in my back room, ready for a new adventure.

The new couch is ready for some contrasting cushions and blanket, a real lamp, a small side table, a chair, my upholstered window seat cushions and some other manner of table across from it. Oh, and shelves in the wall niches. You know, not much. Just, well, everything.

It's all a work in progress. I just happened to find the couch first. (And get buyer's remorse on it first.) Come over and sit on my couch and tell me it's the best couch you've ever seen. Lie to me if you have to.

Olbrich Gardens Spring Afternoon
Originally uploaded by WisDoc
Backyard gardens are so lovely to relax in.

Unfortunately, they're also a pain in the butt to build and maintain. My goal is to take the piece of crap that I was presented with when I moved in and transform it into something simple that looks clean, orderly, pleasant and requires pretty minimal work.

Of course, that means a lot of work.

The works was started by me and mostly my parents, cleaning up all the debris. That was weeks/months ago. And then, a couple of weeks ago, my dad worked on grading the soil and laying patio stones. I also pruned and weeded my garden a bit and have tended to a few things, but really not done much beyond that.

Tuesday I found myself at the Loblaws Garden Centre's closing-down sale. Plants for a dollar. ONE DOLLAR for a TREE for goddessakes!? Well, I couldn't even take it because it was too big to just carry home with me. Instead, I scooped up as many 75%-off perennials as I could carry and hurried home. I grabbed my Chinese cart and rushed back, watching the clock. I got there with 10 minutes to pick out my garden.

I got a euonymous bush for $3, Alberta pines for $1/ea, a couple of chrysanthymums for $2 total and another bunch of flowering perennials for for $2 total.

And tonight, I filled all my flower pots outside with my new treasures. I'm a little covered in mosquito bites. But I've mostly weeded and raked away all the refuse from my giant silver maple.

And now I wait to see if my crappy gardening skills will yield a fruitful peaceful garden. Or if my sore back will all be for naught.

I know I said I wasn't working on my house anymore, but then my mom and dad came over to help finish up a few things. Oddly, it didn't seem like work. Of course, that's probably because they did most of the work while I rode around in their car and did errands like:
  • Brought back empties
  • Ordered foam for my window seat (which is much more expensive than I thought)
  • Got propane for my BBQ
  • Picked up colour swatches for the paint for my kitchen (from Ecopaints)
  • Groceries
  • Picked up my new dining chairs from G.U.F.F
  • Bought pots for plants and the start of a blind idea at IKEA
  • Bought patio stones and a laundry line from Home Depot (see below)
  • Oh, and some weeding and pruning/tying up my roses
All this while my mom did touch-up painting in my back room and my dad finished grading the soil in the backyard and then leveled and placed the patio stones.

And they look awesome! Well, you can compare and contrast the above picture with the "before" shot here. Even though I still haven't cleaned up everything or gotten my garden really together, it's still looking better. It used to be quite unusable. Unsightly. My mom and dad have really helped whip it into shape!

So last night, Gordon and I decided to take advantage of the new al fresco situation. With my patio set on the stones and a nice mosquito-killing lantern, we fired up my BBQ and threw on the most amazing steak. We made some delectable veggies and potatoes with cheese from the Leslieville Cheese Market. (A favourite of Gordon's. If I like sweet things, he LIIIKES cheese.)

And we had a lovely dinner outside. I tossed around some ideas for the rest of my backyard. While Gordon convinced me NOT to replace my stairs but instead to refinish them. And it didn't even make me feel overwhelmed.

I had a moment out there in the stillness when I pictured Gordon living here. I notice that he is becoming more engaged in the house and it makes me happy. Makes me feel like a partnership. Like I won't be living in this place by myself forever.

When he took the dishes inside. When he made suggestions on what to eat. When he helped cook. When he had opinions and ideas and paid attention. It gave me a warm, excited feeling in my stomach.

And I started to feel really good about this house. There is a lot of love here. Thanks for all the love that everyone has put into it. Thank you.

Well, the renovations have begun!

This weekend, I signed the deal with the contractor. Gulp.

Then I went shopping for hardwoord flooring, tiles, kitchen cupboards, appliances, and lighting.

Gulp!

It's a lot of stuff. It's a lot of money. If you know me, I don't like spending money. I'm very very careful with my money. So I did not like signing that contractor's initial cheque.

However, I'm sure this will all work out. I'm sure that I will have a beautiful house in the end. Check out the flooring type I'm looking at and let me know what you think: Dubeau Presitge series in "Brownie".

Thanks to Sarah for her valuable style and product input. And Gordon and his brother for their "input" as well. :)
